Originally constructed during WWI, Building 23 was built with the specific intent of testing early airplane designs. Over the years, Building 23 was transformed into multiple testing areas, support facilities and administrative offices. Demolition work performed by O’Rourke entailed removal of all interior construction while maintaining the historical architectural building shell for future renovation. Work involved removal of all interior construction consisting of multiple elevated floors, at-grade concrete slab, interior walls, ceilings, abandoned overhead cranes, exterior hangar doors, curtain walls and all existing MEP systems and components. Work was completed in strict compliance with the U.S. Army Corps. of Engineer’s standards including EM 385-1-1 safety requirements.
