DP&L Longworth Steam Station Demolition
Location: Dayton, OH
Scope of Work:
Asbestos Abatement, Structural Demolition, Site Work
Project Detail:
The DP&L Steam Station demolition project entailed the asbestos abatement & demolition of a shuttered steam plant by conventional demolition means and methods. The steam plant contained 6 large brick boilers. The building was 160’ tall at its highest roof level. An unusual feature of this power plant was that except for the foundations and footings all of the structure was above grade. There was no basement or below equipment bases. This fact coupled with the customary heavy nature of power generating components forced strict attention to a systematic progression of deconstruction and reduction. It was crucial that the building be taken down in such a manner that it would not become top heavy or imbalanced. The site was also in a very urban downtown area directly adjacent to a large private grade/high school campus. This inner urban setting required extra attention to dust control and traffic maintenance.
